Visiting artist Sydnie Jimenez will lead a hand-building workshop focusing on a standing figure in her style. She will demonstrate her way of coil-building, pinching, and some of her preferred surface finishing techniques.
Students will be provided with 25 lbs of red, brown, or white clay to create a 15” maximum figurative sculpture, surface materials, and communal tools. Students will have designated shelf space for the duration of the workshop, and the option to utilize open studio for the duration of the workshop. This workshop is recommended for folks who have some experience and general understanding of handbuilding techniques and terminology, but can be customized to your skill and level of determination.
Open studio will be shorted to 3-6pm due to the class being held during open studio hours.
About Sydnie:
Sydnie Jimenez received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2020) focusing in ceramic sculpture and is a recipient of the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship (2020). Much of her work centers around the representation and humanization of black and brown youth in an American context. She illustrates in clay self-expression as a form of protest and self care to protect against a Eurocentric society founded on white supremacy and colonization. She has recently shown with galleries in the US and abroad including Albertz-Benda (LA), Moosey Gallery (UK), Mindy Solomon Gallery (Miami), and Anthony Gallery (Chicago). Jimenez was recently a long-term resident artist at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago and previously at the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana. She currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
