In this two session water whistle workshop, we will focus on creating a water whistle based on Peruvian whistling vessels. We will be creating our water whistles using handbuilding techniques including pinching, coiling, and slab building. Open to all levels, prior clay experience is helpful.
Week 1
-pinching and constructing a whistle
-testing and adjusting whistle
-pinching, coiling, slab building 2 vase shaped vessels
-pinching, coiling, slab building a cover for the whistle
Week 2
-attaching the water whistle together: whistle, vessels, cover, and connecting tube
-carving and adding additional decorations
-painting with underglaze (optional/depends on time)
-final test of whistle mechanism before bisque firing
Students will receive 10lbs of clay, storage space for projects and materials, and access to open studio for the duration of the course. At the end of the course, students will have a bisque fired vessel that they can glaze after the class has concluded.
