Surface Design Class Series (8 Week + Drop in)
In this class series, students can opt in to take the full 8 week course, or pick and choose the classes they are interested in attending. Classes will be limited to 10 students, and all materials and tools will be provided. See a full description of each course below, along with what is provided. Students will be expected to bring premade work to the classes in the stage that is needed for the technique, unless otherwise specified.
8 week students will have access to open studio for the duration of the class, as well as storage of projects.
Drop in students must take projects with them at the end of each session, unless it is ready to be fired in the kiln. No storage will be provided.
Week 1: Texture + Carving / June 14 9am-12pm
Instructor: Kalie Holdren
Description: In this class, students will explore mark making techniques on the surface of clay with tools, found objects, and our hands. 10 lbs of red clay will be provided to each student, and the project will be made in class.
Week 2: Monoprinting + Sgraffito/ June 21 9am-12pm
Instructor: Kass Grays
Description: In this class, students will explore making, dying, and sieving colored slips, painting on to newsprint and clay, and carving into the surface of slip to create lines and patterns. Students will be provided with white slip, 100 g of mason stain, squeeze bottles, carving tools and newsprint. Please bring fresh/ soft leatherhard work to this class and a respirator if you are sensitive to dust, as we will be working with dry materials. K95 masks will be provided.
Week 3: Silkscreening on Clay/ June 28 9am-12pm
Instructor: Carly Mendenhall
Description: In this class, students will learn how to silkscreen onto clay by drawing/ searching for images, exposing onto a screen, and printing onto clay with underglaze. Students will be provided with an EZ Screen Kit (that they will be able to keep and use for future projects), underglaze, newsprint. Please bring leatherhard and/ or bisque fired projects.
Week 4: Wax Resist and Vinyl Stencils/ July 5 9am-12pm
Instructor: Alexa Adamson
Description: In this class, students will explore utilizing wax resist and vinyl stencil materials to create imagery on their work. Students will be provided with stroke and coat wonderglazes, stencil material, and wax resist. Please bring leatherhard and/ or bisque fired work.
Week 5: Gloop and Special FX Glazes/ July 12 9am-12pm
Instructor: Jess Stapp
Description: In this class, students will learn the ins and outs of “gloop” glazes and special FX glazes in both sculptural and functional work. Students will be provided with shared glazes to experiment with, as well as various applicators. Please bring bisque fired work.
Week 6: Iron Decals/ July 19 9am-12pm
Instructor: Kristen Watrous
Description: In this class, students will learn about iron decal application. Students will be provided with waterslide paper printed images, letters, and sayings to assemble onto their work. Students will also have the opportunity to create and print one sheet of images of their choosing (complying with copyright usage laws and the capabilities of the technique). Please bring glaze fired work, preferable a shiny and lighter colored surface, as darker glazes will not show decals easily.
Week 7: Luster and overglaze decals/ July 26 9am-12pm
Instructor: Rachel Martin
Description: In this class, students will learn about metallic overglaze surfaces called luster. We will also explore overglaze decals. Students will be provided with shared gold, silver, and mother of pearl lusters, and a random assortment of overglaze decals. Please bring glaze fired work, preferable a shiny and lighter colored surface for decals, as darker glazes will not show decals easily.
Week 8: Show and Tell/ Wrap up/ August 2 9am-12pm
All students and instructors are invited to attend this class! We will have a pitch in, show off our finished works made during the class, and wrap up any final projects.
